NHS70 - The National Health Service Celebrates 70 Years
On the 5 July the National Health Service (NHS) turns 70 and many will be taking time to reflect on, and celebrate, the achievements of this national institution.
The NHS began its celebrations earlier in the year, with the launch of a new 10p coin and an awards scheme where MPs were encouraged to nominate local 'health heroes' in their communities. Each month of this year, the NHS will be looking back at some of its most outstanding achievements over the past 70 years. Visit the Spotlight on Priorities page to find out more.
The NHS is encouraging as many as possible to get involved with the celebrations and has provided a number of ideas and resources on their website. One idea that we particularly like is the #NHS1000miles challenge - all you have to do is pledge to walk (or run, up to you) 1000 miles this year and keep a tally. We love the idea because it will help us get fitter, and when we're fitter and healthier this eases the burden on NHS services. Everyone's a winner! Find out how to join the #NHS1000miles challenge.
There are other ways to join in the celebrations and show the NHS just how much we appreciate the vital role the service plays in our lives, and to recognise and thank the extraordinary NHS staff who support and care for us day in, day out.
