Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025: Early Detection Saves Lives

Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of the importance of early detection, support, and research in the fight against breast cancer. It’s a time to raise awareness, celebrate survivors, and honour those whose lives have been affected by the disease.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer in the UK, but thanks to progress in awareness, screening, and treatment, survival rates are improving every year. The message is simple yet powerful: finding breast cancer early can save lives.

Everyone, regardless of gender, should be aware of the signs and regularly check for changes in their breasts or chest area. This includes:

  • A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • Changes in size, shape, or appearance
  • Unexplained pain or swelling
  • Skin dimpling or redness
  • Nipple changes or discharge

If you notice anything unusual, speak to your GP as soon as possible.

Beyond awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also about community and care. Support networks, research charities, and local organisations provide vital help from emotional wellbeing and financial guidance to advocacy and recovery services. Wearing pink, fundraising, or simply starting a conversation can all make a difference.

Below is a list of organisations that provide services for cancer support

  • Future Dreams – Provides a wide range of support and services for women affected by breast cancer
  • Pauls cancer support - The Paul D'Auria Cancer Support Centre provides support and advice to anyone affected by cancer in London, including carers and family members.
  • Wandsworth Carers Centre – Has a cancer support service

Together, we can help ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone and that awareness continues to turn into action, early diagnosis and support.
