Patient Data consultation report

The Government launched a consultation on the NHS' plans to change how it uses patient data. Find out what people told us about the topic.

What we did

Healthwatch Wandsworth (HWW) wanted to ensure Wandsworth residents have a voice in this consultation so we identified the aspects of the consultation that would have a significant impact on them and sought the opinions of local people through our own survey.

Our survey particularly focused on how the NHS should protect people's personal data and  how people would access information that will help them understand what happens to your personal information.

We wanted to measure the views and experiences of local residents in Wandsworth and their satisfaction with the Government’s proposals.

The consultation was open from 27th July 2016 until 7th September 2016 and was taken to various outreach events.

We also publicised via Facebook and Twitter, and on our website to seek opinions from a wider audience.

Key Findings

  • Data protection is quite technical so some patients found it difficult to engage and respond.
  • Patients want more information that is easily accessible so that anyone and everyone can make an informed choice.
  • We found that people clearly feel that more can be done to inform them of the changes taking place and their rights.
  • People shared varied experiences about how happy they had been about their data use in the NHS.

The results made clear that there was a desire for more information on what is being proposed and for the information to be easily accessible and delivered in different formats to help people make an informed choice.
