St George's Maternity Services was investigated in March 2023 as part of a national review (of all maternity services that haven't been rated since 2021). Since the report came back 'inadequate' on 17th August, St George's University Hospitals (the group that runs these services) have shared their official response, sharing the actions taken to make improvements.

Healthwatch have been told that St George's responded to CQC concerns about staffing and can confirm that they have recruited 15 new midwifes.

St George's have also made a range of changes to their operational systems, like reviewing their risk assessments, changing the way that patients are admitted to the service and changing their cleaning and monitoring standards. They have also installed a birthing pool.

It is important to share that patient satisfaction is rated as high. The CQC national patient experience maternity survey rated St George’s the fourth highest for patient satisfaction nationally in 2022, as well as being rated in the top three performing Trusts in London for antenatal (before birth) care.

If you are still concerned by these findings, there are several ways you can respond.

  1. Call the dedicated helpline at St. George's Maternity Services: 020 8725 2777
  2. Contact your GP to discuss your options or change your service provider.
