Recently the CQC have found that there needs to be more of a focus on oral health in care homes. You can read more about this here.

What you can do

Here is a quick guide on how staff can easily improve the oral health of care home residents with four simple questions:

  1. How do you usually manage your daily mouth care and what help would you like?
  2. What dental aids do you currently use? For example, do you use a manual or electric toothbrush? Do you use mouthwash or floss?
  3. Do you have dentures and, if so, are they marked with your name? If not, would you like them to be marked?
  4. When did you last see the dentist? If you don’t have a dentist, would you like help to find one?
Healthwatch England have produced a guide to help people know what oral health care they can expect in care homes.
