New guidance around hospital discharge during the Covid-19 pandemic

One of the changes in the new Covid-19 legislation lifts the requirement on hospitals to conduct continuing care assessments, in order to free up acute beds as quickly as possible.

During the Coronavirus Pandemic, hospital discharges are happening differently. New Covid-19 legislation lifts the requirement on hospitals to conduct continuing care assessments, in order to free up acute beds as quickly as possible. So what does this mean when you are leaving hospital?

Due to pressures on hospitals, once you no longer need care in hospital, as decided by the health team looking after you, you will be discharged. You will not have a choice over your discharge, but the team will work to discharge you to a safe and appropriate place and they will discuss your needs with you.

NHS community health providers have set up a new discharge service, operating seven days a week, to ensure people get the ongoing care they need.

For most patients, this will mean that on the day of discharge or the day after, they will be visited in their home by an appropriate professional who will arrange the necessary support for them.

For a small number of patients whose healthcare needs mean they can’t return to their home, another place of care will be arranged. This may be at Queen Mary's Hospital or Ronald Gibson House Care Home in the first available bed and people will be supported to move to their preferred care home when a space becomes available.

The discharge service that is now in place means that people are being discharged from hospital quicker and it is hoped that most people will go home once the team looking after you think care can be safely continued.

More information on the new arrangements brought by the changes in law is available here. There are also some leaflets to help you available below.

We would also like to hear from you about your experiences of being discharged from hospital during the Coronavirus Pandemic. We have a few short questions to ask about this, if you have a few minutes to help us understand how things are working. The NHS is starting to consider how to evolve it’s services and we would like to share with them how it’s working for patients.
